WADE Mentore, 46, of Lot 4 Rainbow City, Linden, appeared on Monday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with having in his possession 460 grammes of cannabis-sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking. The offence was allegedly committed on September 18 at Mogaria Hill Top Dam.

Mentore, a miner, pleaded not guilty to the charge, but Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that on the day in question, at about 15:00 hrs, police conducted a stop-and-search exercise on the defendant, who was at the time driving a motorcycle, and found two parcels of the illegal substance in a blue shopping bag he was carrying. Ranks told him of the offence and arrested and charged him.

Prosecutor Grant opposed bail on grounds of the nature and prevalence of the offence, and the fact that no special reason for bail had been raised by the unrepresented defendant.

Mentore was remanded to prison and the case was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for October 14.
